Perdido Key, which translates to "Lost Key," was discovered by Spanish explorer Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora in 1693

while searching for a deep-water route to Perdido Bay. Initially inhabited by Native American tribes, the area became a distinct island around 1933 due to the construction of the Intracoastal Waterway.
